This 1997 Mediterranean vacation home was feeling a bit tired, so the homeowner requested a facelift to the existing Kitchen and living areas. She was concerned that the Kitchen felt closed-off and tight, so the overall design concept was to create an open plan connecting the Kitchen and Living area, and to incorporate a central Breakfast Bar into the new design. The overall direction was to create a monochromatic, simple interior with light walls and cabinets, contrasting dark-wood case pieces, neutral linen fabrics, and accents of ocean blue. 

The new design would incorporate the following:

1. Demolish existing carpet and tile flooring, and install new laminate flooring. This property serves a rental for portions of the year, and an easy-maintenance and durable floor finish was paramount. New wide-plank cypress-look laminate was incorporated, adding warmth and texture.
2. New lighting throughout would be simple and casual, with finishes in reclaimed wood and iron.
3. Window treatments would consist of textured blinds with a tailored look throughout. Separately, the Dining Room would feature brown linen drapery panels with delicate embroidery in hues of blue.  
4. New kitchen cabinets and appliances incorporate a simple painted rustic oak finish with clean shaker panel doors, and chunky, carved legs at the breakfast bar. Backsplash tile is an ocean blue mosaic, adding fresh color and drawing the eye in to the kitchen from the Living area. 
5. Art and pillows incorporate tropical motifs, and add color and pattern sparingly.
6. The mantle receive new stone hearth and surround.
